Designer name: Matthew Williamson
Origin: Manchester
Design background: Graduating from Central St Martins in June 1994 with a BA in Fashion Design and Printed Textiles, Matthew’s first job following graduation was a freelance design project with Marni. He was then employed by Monsoon & Accessorize: “It was on frequent buying trips to India for the latter that gave me the opportunity to put my own swatches into development that became my first collection: ‘Electric Angels’, shown at London Fashion Week in September 1997”.
Design signatures: “I am known for my use of colour, print and embellishment.”
Career highlight: “The publication of my self-titled book by Rizzoli in 2010 felt like a huge achievement. Putting the book together enabled me to reflect over the last 13 years of my career and the journey I’d taken.”
How would you describe your ideal customer? “Anyone who loves my clothes! I don’t design with a particular look or age in mind as it’s obvious from working in my stores that my clothes are worn by all different types of people.
The Matthew Williamson woman is feminine and sexy, fun and free-spirited, with a laid-back approach to glamour.”
Trademark piece: “I would say an evening dress in my signature style – combining colour, print and embellishment!”
What does 2012 hold for your brand? “2012 marks our 15th year in fashion. We look forward to celebrating later in the year with two exciting projects. We also have a few interesting collaborations lined up for 2012.”
What is your favourite decade in fashion? “I love the 1970s most of all as it had a languid, laid-back feel but was still super glamorous.”
Where do you go in London to seek artistic inspiration? “You don’t have to go far to find inspiration wherever you are in London. It’s so diverse. Galleries and museums are some of the best in the world but a stroll down any street often does the trick!”
